Interview of Dark Phreak Arts

So tell us about Dark Phreak Arts:

Dark Phreak Arts is a online design business which is dedicated in providing quality service to all customers. Originally DPA was targeting just author’s but we have broadened our horizons with creating designs for small businesses as well. DPA was created by myself, Gemma Newey, after an author friend, and myself, couldn’t find a designer that we liked. So I decided to design them myself, and I came to realize how much I really enjoyed it … there was no stopping me from then on!

Since opening in 2013, DPA has 3 designers … who are accomplished in their own right. We all work hard to make DPA the best designer website out there. But I bet you are wondering why Dark Phreak Arts as the name of the business … well … honestly it’s because Dark Phreak used to be my old nickname (back in the day) and I felt like it was different to what else was out there … I just added ‘Arts’ at the end to show it’s a design business. I think It wouldn’t have been the business I wanted it to be, if I hadn’t chose that name.

How did you get into design?

Well I’ve always loved art and design, and I couldn’t help myself but learn how to use photoshop. I love designing things, so when I wanted to help a friend, who is an author, with a book cover, I jumped at the chance, and the rest … as they say … is history.

How long has Dark Phreak Arts been up and running?

DPA has been up and running since April 2013 … wow, I can’t believe how long the site has been running!

What are your services? Do you offer any extra services besides cover designs, logos, and book trailers that would help out authors?

Ooo, now you’re asking. Well we offer a large variety of services, and we try to add more depending on what a customer needs. We can design ebook & paperback covers, flyers, ecards, facebook & web banners, A4 posters, logo’s, book trailers, business cards, and band CD sleeve cover designs – we’ve recently added promo ecards to promote books, authors, etc., which can be posted on a website or facebook. I’m looking to add hand drawn/painted/digital cover designs … but that’s a little further down the line. Honestly, if our customers are looking for something specific, we don’t mind having idea’s or suggestions thrust our way. We want to be as useful to our authors/customers as possible.

Now all our work is posted on our facebook page and our website, to help promote the author … we also will hold back on a cover design if the author has a specific date they want to reveal it. Currently we are holding a special event on facebook, whereby if you like our page, share our competition post and comment, we are offering THREE ebook/paperback cover designs for FREE, as well as two other runner up prizes.

We like to hold promotional offers and competitions as often as possible to allow other authors, who don’t have a lot of money … what with being an independent … to see what they can get, at really good prices.

Is there anything you don’t do? Any Genres you try to avoid?

At the moment, we don’t do hand drawn/painted/digitally painted designs … but we hope to change that in the future. Genre’s … we will do any genre … nothing is too difficult for us.

What would you say is the most challenging about Designing Covers?

Erm … I would say designing a cover to the vision of the author. Sometimes that can be a little tricky, but that’s why we provide cover proofs at each stage, to make sure we’re going down the right track and getting that vision correct.

What is the best thing about Designing covers?

It’s fun, and interesting, and even … occasionally … challenging. But that’s what so great about it. You never know what you’re going to be requested with next, and what that person’s vision is for the design … so each request is unique and different. Not only that, we get to meet some great people!

Is there a link where we can see your work?

Well you can check out any of our work via the website – www.darkphreakarts.co.uk or you can check out our facebook page – www.facebook.com/darkphreakarts.uk

Is there anything else you would like us to know?

Yeah … I know that a lot of people think books covers are expensive, but we like to keep our prices reasonable … not only that we don’t expect payment until YOU as the customer, are completely happy with the design. We will keep making changes until we finally accomplish what it is you envision.

We provide a discount of £5, if you provide the main picture for your design – though we do need confirmation from you that the picture we receive either you purchased it from a sourcing site like canstockphoto.com or that the photographer gave permission for you to use it. We don’t use any illegal pictures in our work, and you own the rights to the end results. We just ask that you mentions us in your book when it’s published.

DPA have friendly staff, we love to help, even if it’s something as simple as a logo. We don’t take anything likely, and work hard for each person no matter how big or small the request.

What is your turn around time?

Now that depends on the request … but usually we can get a initial design completed within 8 hours. I think the quickest cover design that has been done, was completed within 4 hours and the longest was 3 days. But like I said, it all depends on the project and the vision of the author/customer.
